Rant’s & Raves: Stealing Education

“Every year, many, many stupid people graduate from college. And if they can do it, so can you.”
― John Green
So we’ve all been watching this college admission scandal go down and has a single mother of 2 I felt like venting on this topic. Parents are facing jail for lying about where they live to send their children to a school in a better district, sending them to charter schools to hopefully give them a chance at the dream of attending college and I totally understand. Both of my children are straight A students since kindergarten and I have made many sacrifices to make sure they get the best education. Because I didn’t need the stress of being caught breaking the law I went about things different. First I chose the cities I lived in based on their school performances. I knew I couldn’t afford to send my kids to private school their entire academic career so I wanted to make sure I lived in areas with a good public school system. I used websites like https://www.greatschools.org/ to see how the schools preformed on standard tests and overall. Then to make sure I rented a place in that school zone I would go to the school districts websites plug in different addresses of places I was interested in from Zillow to see if that address was in the school zone I wanted. Now of course living in areas with high preforming public schools can be expensive but I even rented a 1 bedroom apartment (because that was all I could afford in the area) to ensure my girls got the education they deserved. My oldest daughter attends one of the best academic boarding high schools in the United States because she worked hard and maintained her 4.0 GPA while actually participating in sports and music at school. I’m still making sacrifices to pay my portion of her tuition but it will all be worth it when she’s able to attend the college of her choice.
I’ve had long talks with my girls that only a single mother of minority children would understand, I’ve gotten creative on giving them the life they deserve on what is considered a lower middle class salary in the state of California and there’s nothing I wouldn’t do for them. But when you can afford to give your children the best at least teach them a work ethic they can take with them into adulthood. Teach them that some things need to be earned to be worth it. When you can afford the best private schools, tutors, private sports coaches, etc. you shouldn’t have to cheat. You shouldn’t have to steal.
